Car Hire in Far East mainland China is not possible, and poor driving standards and poor road conditions make travelling hazardous. Travelling after dark outside major cities is not recommended. Foreign and international driving licences are not recognized in China. Foreigners must hold a foreigner residence permit and meet local requirements to obtain a Chinese driver's licence. Travel near military installations is restricted. In China's special administrative region of Macao you will need an International Driving Permit. The streets here are both narrow and twisting and are very congested. In Hong Kong, like Macao, they drive on the left and you will need an International Driving Permit.

If you wish to hire a car in the Far East country of Japan, you will need an International Driving Permit. Traffic here drives on the left hand side of the road and travel by motor vehicle can be quite challenging. Roads are narrow, signs are in Japanese, and city traffic is congested. Turning on a red light is not permitted unless specifically authorized. Foreign driving licenses are admissible for hire cars in the Far East Philippines where they drive on the right. Road conditions in this region of the Far East are generally poor, and if you intend venturing outside a main centre your hire car should be a 4 x 4.

Taiwan is another country in the Far East where you require an International Driving Permit if you wish to hire a car. You will need to obtain a Taiwan Driving Visa and our local representative will help you in this regard. They drive on the right in Taiwan and are said to drive like maniacs, so care should be taken. Aggressive driving seems to be the norm in some parts of the Far East, as Korea is another country where a hire car driver needs to be cautious. The roads in this country are very congested, and you'll need an International Driving Permit.
