 Hokitika is a miniscule little town of hardly 3,000 people on the western coast of New Zealand’s South Islands, about 40km south of Greymouth.

Hokitika used to be a gold mining town during the gold rush of the 1860s and gold is still mined at the Goliath Mine. The old Government Building has survived too, paying testimony that Hokitika was once, even if only for a brief time, the seat of the provincial government of Westland. The statue of 1890s New Zealand prime minister and MP, Richard Seddon ("King Dick") stands in front of the building. The clock tower on the corners of Sewell and Weld commemorates New Zealanders who fell in the Boer War.
