 Kaikohe is a tiny town of little more than 4,000 people in New Zealand’s Far North District on the North Island.

Hone Heke was the grand nephew of the Maori chief of the same name and was a respected politician. A statue was erected in is honour in 1911 and this can still be visited today on a prominent hill near Kaikohe. The waters of the mercury– and soda-rich Ngawha Hot Springs are popular for the treatment of skin ailments and rheumatism. At the Pioneer Village, tourists can view the 1862 Waimate North courthouse, a smithy and a tiny jail, among other 19th Century buildings and architecture. The old railroad that used to transport timbers is also still here.
