South America is a vast and beautiful continent. It is the land of the Amazon, the largest river in the world, with about 20% of the world’s entire river flow. Large parts of the continent are covered by the Amazon Basin and mostly devoid of road or civilisation, but there is still plenty to see elsewhere.
There are other spectacular natural wonders in South America; in Equador, you would do well to visit the Cotopaxi National Park where you can witness the active Cotopaxi Volcano. Other fascinating volcanoes in Equador can be seen at the Equadorian Alpine Institute; Guagua Pichcihca and Tungurahua come to mind. Rio de Janeiro is famous for its beautiful beaches and is a popular tourist destination, awash with resorts and all the major conveniences of a large city. The beaches north and south of Lima in Peru are also well worth a visit.
The largest country in South America and one of the easiest for car hire is Brazil. You don't even need an International Driving License - just your own country's driving license. It's a good idea to carry a Portuguese translation of the license around with you though. Be well advised though that road travel is hazardous due to the highly aggressive driving habits of its nationals and its poorly maintained roads, which cause Brazil to have one of the highest road accident rates in the world.
The roads in Argentina are generally in a good condition throughout the country, but although you can use your regular driving license, it is advisable to have an International Driving License in this South American country when opting for car hire. It is also worth mentioning that the highways are in Argentina are privately owned, and so you have to pay a toll from one stretch of road to another. Although there are plenty of filling stations in every city and on highways, it's a good idea to fill your tank before setting out on rural roads since filling stations are harder to find in some of the more isolated areas. Drivers are typically aggressive and the streets are a mess. There is little or no respect for pedestrians. You should drive defensively in Argentina and with great care.
For car hire in the South American country of Venezuela it is recommended that you have an International Driving Permit. You're advised to exercise a great deal of caution when driving in this country because of the high levels of serious crime and ongoing political tensions. Avoid going anywhere closer than 80kms from the border with Columbia. Colombian narcotics gangs and terrorist groups have carried out kidnappings in these areas. It's imperative to drive defensively driving in Venezuela. Child car seats and seatbelts are not required and are rarely available in rental cars. Outside the major cities, night driving can be dangerous because of unmarked road damage or repairs in progress, unlighted vehicles and livestock.
If you have to hire a car in the South American country of Peru, be advised that driving habits in this country are extremely dangerous. Peruvian drivers are aggressive, and accident rates are very high. Driving standards in Peru are poor, with stop signs and traffic lights frequently ignored. Drivers overtake on either side, with no concern for pedestrians or oncoming traffic. Crashes resulting in death and injury take place almost every day. Finally, in Chile most countries driving licenses are honoured by car rental companies and the police, although strictly speaking an international license is required. Like other South American countries if you have a hire car you'll need to drive defensively.
