Whereas some South East Asia car hire destinations may be safe and have few problems, there are others where it is sometimes unwise to stray. In Laos, for example, it is unwise to travel to the east of Vientiane - the roads are unpaved and this area is still rife with violence - attempt only with 4 x 4 and if you're in a convoy. The route to the south (Route 13 south) is fine as far down as Savannakhet. Thereafter you need to fill up with petrol as often as possible and to carry a spare can. Car hire in the South East Asia country of Vietnam is not easy. Vietnamese driving licences are mandatory for all drivers of motor vehicles. Non-Vietnamese citizens are only permitted to drive in Vietnam if they hold a temporary Vietnamese driver's licence. Driving without a proper licence in Vietnam may involve severe penalties.
Such penalties might be as much as a three year jail sentence for driving unlicensed, up to ten years imprisonment for driving unlicensed and causing an accident, and up to twenty years imprisonment for driving unlicensed and causing an accident resulting in death. There's a moral there somewhere!
Things are a little easier in Thailand, where although your foreign driver's license bears no weight, an International Driving Permit is recognized. Be sure to enquire about every aspect of car hire and all its implications wherever you go in South East Asia. Make doubly sure that you are covered by insurance - even insurance cover in some of the countries can be quite dodgy, but our representatives will go out of their way to ensure that you understand the full implications of South East Asia car hire.
