Car Rental South Africa
Car rental in South Africa is the only way for visitors to get around safely and easily. Public transport is lacking and it is recommended that visitors drive themselves when at all possible. CarHire4Less operates throughout South Africa in all the cities and a lot of towns, as well as the airports. We offer car rental in South Africa in association with Alamo, Budget, Europcar and Hertz and can offer you the very best rates in the industry. South Africa can become very hot in summer, regularly exceeding 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), so ensure that you rent a car with air conditioning in the hot season, which is from October to March. Most rental car in South Africa have manual transmission (“stick shift” or “standard”) and you would have to request a vehicle with automatic transmission explicitly if you require one or if you cannot drive a manual shift vehicle. Even if you can drive a manual vehicle, keep in mind that South Africans drive on the left and drivers sit on the right, so the gears would have to be operated with the left hand. Be ever vigilant if you are not used to driving on the left, because it is very easy to forget on which side of the road to travel after pulling out from a roadside stop! The general speed limit on South African highways, National and Regional roads is 120km/h (75mph), although it may be 100km/h (62mph) in places. The maximum legal speed within city limits is usually 60km/h (37mph). Speed limits are always signposted in kilometres per hour and the speedometers of South African cars are marked in the same unit, so be vigilant in keeping to the speed limits, as these are strictly enforced. It is compulsory to wear seatbelts and it is illegal for anyone to operate a cellular telephone with one hand while driving – hands-free phone systems are permitted. You may also never park your vehicle in the face of oncoming traffic on the wrong side of the road, even if it is in a legal parking bay. South Africans tend to have aggressive driving styles and it is recommended that visitors keep well left and allow faster traffic to pass on the right. Beware of minibus taxis, whose drivers tend to disregard road rules. South African cities make extensive use of multi-phase traffic lights, so always keep an eye on the lights, as traffic driving straight may be required to stop and traffic turning may be allowed to proceed, or vice versa, depending on the lights/arrows illuminated. A flashing red arrow means that you may proceed in the direction of the arrow, if no traffic is approaching. South Africa has many lovely places to visit and the premier tourist province is the Western Cape. Cape Town is the capital and holds delights such as Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, the Table Mountain Nature Reserve, splendid beaches and many museums and architectural treasures. The Garden Route runs along the southern Cape coast and is one of the most scenic drives in the country. The Cape West coast is known for its abundant wildflowers in the Spring and the Winelands are famous for its beautiful mountains, valleys and world-class wines. The Northern Cape is home to beautiful desert regions and the Augrabies Falls and the Mpumalanga Province is famous for the Kruger National Park. CarHire4Less makes car rental in South Africa easy and painless. Remember that our rates include airport surcharges, Third Party insurance and collision damage waiver immunity, but it excludes personal accident insurance and luggage/belongings coverage – you may add these if you wish. |
