Réunion Island is 200km southwest of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean and is an overseas region of France. It is relatively small, at about 2 500 square kilometres and there are just over 800 000 inhabitants.

If you are fit and feeling adventurous, an early start (around 05h00) is advised for the five-hour hike up Piton De La Fournaise, Réunion’s most active volcano. Luckily, it has not erupted in nearly twenty years. The hike starts in St. Paul, which was once Réunion Island’s capital. The town sports traditional Créole architecture and an interesting street market on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. In fact, the island is dominated by its natural features, such as its beautiful beaches and numerous volcanic valleys.
